HOUSEHOLDS AND FAMILIES: From 2005-2007 there were 99,000 households in St. Lucie County. The average household size was 2.5 people.

Families made up 69 percent of the households in St. Lucie County. This figure includes both married-couple families (53 percent) and other families (16 percent). Nonfamily households made up 31 percent of all households in St. Lucie County. NATIVITY AND LANGUAGE: Sixteen percent of the people living in St. Lucie County from 2005-2007 there were foreign born. Eighty-four percent was native, including 31 percent who were born in Florida.

Among people at least five years old living in St. Lucie County from 2005-2007, 19 percent spoke a language other than English at home. OCCUPATIONS AND TYPE OF EMPLOYER: Among the most common occupations were: Sales and office occupations, 29 percent; Management, professional, and related occupations, 25 percent; Service occupations, 19 percent; Construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations, 16 percent; and Production, transportation, and material moving occupations, 9 percent. Eighty-two percent of the people employed were Private wage and salary workers; 13 percent was Federal, state, or local government workers; and 5 percent was Self-employed in own not incorporated business workers.

TRAVEL TO WORK: Eighty-three percent of St. Lucie County workers drove to work alone from 2005-2007, 11 percent carpooled, less than 0.5 percent took public transportation, and 2 percent used other means. The remaining 3 percent worked at home. Among those who commuted to work, it took them on average 27.3 minutes to get to work.

INCOME: The median income of households in St. Lucie County was $46,288. Seventy-two percent of the households received earnings and 23 percent received retirement income other than Social Security. Thirty-nine percent of the households received Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $15,568. These income sources are not mutually exclusive; that is, some households received income from more than one source.

POVERTY AND PARTICIPATION IN GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS: From 2005-2007, 11 percent of people were in poverty. Seventeen percent of related children under 18 were below the poverty level, compared with 7 percent of people 65 years old and over. Eight percent of all families and 24 percent of families with a female householder and no husband present had incomes below the poverty level.

OCCUPIED HOUSING UNIT CHARACTERISTICS: From 2005-2007, St. Lucie County had 99,000 occupied housing units - 75,000 (76 percent) owner occupied and 23,000 (24 percent) renter occupied. Four percent of the households did not have telephone service and 4 percent of the households did not have access to a car, truck, or van for private use. Multi Vehicle households were not rare. Forty percent had two vehicles and another 16 percent had three or more.

HOUSING COSTS: The median monthly housing costs for mortgaged owners was $1,439, nonmortgaged owners $461, and renters $986. Fifty-two percent of owners with mortgages, 19 percent of owners without mortgages, and 54 percent of renters in St. Lucie County spent 30 percent or more of household income on housing.
